An interview with Robert Henke about AI, the importance of tedium in the creative process, his 2024 LP 'Studio', and his overlooked 2001 masterpiece 'Gravity'
This is a terrific interview (I’m very happy you asked about Torsten Pröfrock!), and Henke is an artist for whom I have a great deal of I respect. That said, I’m disappointed that the discussion of AI fails to address the environmental, economic, cultural, and cognitive impacts of its use, not to mention its flagrant violation of IP laws and egregious practice of training for-profit models on copyrighted works.
Agree actually! I think probably these issues are in the back of all of our minds, just a selective focus to try to keep the light on. I wrote an article paralleling the IP dillution between music and fashion 'How Algorithms are Reshaping Fashion' - at the expense of creators, people want culture but don't want to pay for it.
The co-founder of Ableton, say no more (I owe him my entire music career, lol)! Love his outlook on music, AI, authorship, and being empathetic in today's global climate. Thanks for sharing!
Great interview. Been a Monolake fan for a bit. Learned a lot, always nice to hear about the energy and process behind the sound. Though I never went to film school, I too often see images with sounds, like described for The Elders Disagree track. Thank you!
